Kamilla Cardoso did not miss. The Chicago Sky center made all 13 of her field-goal attempts against the Portland Fire on June 26, finishing with 30 points and eight rebounds and setting a WNBA record for the most field goals made in a game without a miss.
The mark had stood since 2016, when Nneka Ogwumike went 12-for-12. Cardoso broke it by one in a 124-94 Chicago win over the Fire, the expansion franchise that joined the league this season.
This is the version of Cardoso the Sky have been waiting on. "This is what we hoped it would look like from an offensive standpoint," head coach Tyler Marsh said. A center who can finish everything around the rim changes the math for a team that spent recent weeks on the wrong end of nights like Caitlin Clark's 30-point, 10-assist game against them. The Sky have been searching for a consistent identity, and a dominant interior scorer is the cleanest route to one. A perfect shooting line is one game; what it signals is a player who has stopped settling and started dominating the area she is built for.
Cardoso pointed to a familiar voice. Dawn Staley, who coached her to a national title at South Carolina, still checks in. "She texts me all the time," Cardoso said. "Just to make me feel confident and to let me know that she's always in my corner."
The night lands as the WNBA keeps scaling up around its players. The Portland Fire are one of the new franchises in a league that just rewrote its CBA to push the salary cap from $1.5 million to $7 million and add its first real revenue sharing. A 30-point game on flawless shooting is the kind of performance that growth is supposed to surface.
