Klay Thompson has agreed to a two-year contract worth nearly $13 million with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers, ESPN's Tim MacMahon and Shams Charania reported on August 21. The second year includes a player option.
The move followed a buyout in Dallas. Thompson was owed $17.5 million in the final season of the deal he signed with the Mavericks in 2024, and he wanted to play for a contender, per NBC Sports. Dallas had tried to trade him earlier in the offseason without finding a taker at that number. Thompson had to clear waivers after the buyout before he could sign anywhere. The Mavericks finished 26-56 last season.
Masai Ujiri, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, said in the team's statement: "Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization. We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
Thompson is 36. He spent 13 seasons with Golden State, where he won four championships and made five All-Star teams, before joining Dallas in 2024. He has made 2,899 three-pointers, fourth on the all-time list after passing Damian Lillard; Ray Allen sits third at 2,973, which is 74 makes away. ESPN put his recent production at 12.9 points per game on 38.7 percent shooting from three.
Miami's roster changed shape this summer. The Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo in June, then re-signed Andrew Wiggins to a three-year, $64 million deal and added Tim Hardaway Jr. on a one-year, $6.5 million contract. NBC Sports reported that Miami had watched Thompson through the offseason as a floor-spacing fit around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
