- The trade ends a 13-year run in Milwaukee that produced two MVP awards, an NBA championship, and a 32-50 collapse
The Giannis Antetokounmpo era in Milwaukee is over. ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday night that the Bucks have traded their franchise cornerstone and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat, ending weeks of negotiations that had narrowed to two finalists — Boston and Miami — and resolving the question on the eve of the NBA Draft.
The Deal
Miami sends Milwaukee a package built on volume rather than a single star:
- Tyler Herro
- Kel'el Ware
- Jaime Jaquez Jr.
- Kasparas Jakučionis
- 2026 first-round pick (No. 13 overall)
- 2031 unprotected first-round pick
- 2033 unprotected first-round pick
- 2030 pick swap
- 2033 second-round pick
The Celtics' competing offer centered on Jaylen Brown, a five-time All-Star. Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam ultimately chose the Heat's broader package — four rotation players and deep draft capital over Boston's headliner. That decision now leaves the Celtics to answer an uncomfortable question about Brown's future in Boston after blowing a 3-1 first-round lead against Philadelphia this spring.
Boston answered it soon after, trading Brown to the 76ers for Paul George and four draft picks.
What Miami Gets
Antetokounmpo, 31, joins Bam Adebayo in what becomes the most physically imposing frontcourt in the Eastern Conference. Both players share the same agent, a detail that will matter in six months: Giannis becomes eligible for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension once the post-trade window opens. He currently earns $54.1 million with one guaranteed year remaining on his existing contract.
The Heat emptied four rotation players and three future first-rounders to make this happen. That's the definition of going all-in. Miami's depth is gutted, but the franchise has operated under a simple principle since Pat Riley took control: talent wins, and everything else is replaceable.
What Milwaukee Gets
The Bucks receive Herro as the centerpiece — a 26-year-old scorer who averaged over 23 points per game last season — plus three young players and enough draft capital to sustain a rebuild through 2033. The No. 13 pick in Tuesday's draft gives Milwaukee immediate flexibility to add a prospect or move up. Months later, the two sides of this deal would intersect again off the court, when Adebayo and the traded-away Herro were reportedly involved in a Las Vegas altercation.
What they lose is irreplaceable. Antetokounmpo spent 13 years in Milwaukee. He was drafted 15th overall in 2013, won back-to-back MVPs in 2019 and 2020, and delivered the franchise's first championship in 50 years when he scored 50 points in Game 6 of the 2021 Finals. The Bucks went 32-50 this season, missed the postseason, and drew an NBA investigation for benching a healthy Antetokounmpo down the stretch — a sequence Giannis called "a slap in my face." Earlier in the season, he had publicly called out teammates' selfishness after a blowout loss dropped the team to 18-25.
The Bigger Picture
This is the most consequential NBA trade since the Lakers moved Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic in February. It reshapes the East immediately. Miami, which had been pursuing Antetokounmpo for weeks, now carries +550 odds to win the conference. The defending champion Knicks, who just ended a 53-year title drought, have the kind of opponent in the conference that makes repeat bids harder.
For Giannis, the move represents a fresh start in a franchise that has a track record of maximizing superstar acquisitions — from Shaquille O'Neal to LeBron James to Jimmy Butler. The question now is whether a Giannis-Bam pairing can produce what Milwaukee couldn't: sustained contention, not just a single title followed by a slow collapse.
The deal is expected to be formally completed before the draft begins Tuesday night.
His return to Milwaukee is already on the calendar: the 2026-27 NBA schedule has Antetokounmpo playing his first game in Milwaukee as a member of the Heat on January 28.
Miami kept adding shooting around Antetokounmpo through the summer, most recently signing Klay Thompson to a two-year deal after his Mavericks buyout.
