Nike is telling the Kobe draft story on a Dunk Low. The Kobe Bryant x Nike Dunk Low Protro in "Charlotte to LA" releases June 26 for $145, under style code IM0586-500. It commemorates the 30th anniversary of the 1996 NBA Draft, when a 17-year-old Kobe Bryant was selected 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets and immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a prearranged deal. He never played a game for Charlotte.

The shoe

The upper sits on a white leather base with shimmering purple snakeskin-textured overlays — a signature Mamba detail. Teal accents land on the Swoosh, laces, and heel tab in Charlotte Hornets colors. The standout feature is a wear-away mechanism: the teal panels are constructed with a removable top layer that gradually reveals Lakers gold underneath through regular wear, letting the shoe shift allegiance from Charlotte to LA over time. "KOBE" is embroidered on the heel with the letters split between Hornets and Lakers colors.

The build

This is a Protro, not a standard retro. The Dunk Low gets a ReactX foam drop-in insole, enhanced tongue and collar padding, and a redesigned outsole featuring a swirling snake pattern at the pivot point with Kobe's sheath logo integrated into the tread. A layered mesh tongue references Nike's 2010s Torch fabric.

The collection

The "Charlotte to LA" Dunk is part of Nike's broader "Draft Day" tribute series celebrating the 1996 draft class. The collection also includes the Kobe 4 Protro "Draft Day" blind-box pack — a 14-pair set of team colorways — and a Kobe 9 Elite Low EM Protro in a matching Hornets theme, all releasing the same day.

The read

The wear-away conceit is clever and earned. The 1996 draft trade is one of basketball's foundational what-if stories, and encoding it into the shoe's material — a colorway that literally transforms from one franchise to another through use — is the kind of design storytelling that gives a $145 Dunk Low collector-grade weight.

Nike returned to the Dunk Low Protro platform in July for the FC Barcelona x Kobe Bryant x Nike Dunk Low Protro "Black/Field Purple", releasing September 4 for $135 alongside FC Barcelona's Kobe Bryant-inspired 2026-27 away kit.
