Marvel Studios confirmed "Black Panther 3" during its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 25, 2026, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming the film arrives in theaters December 15, 2028. Ryan Coogler, who directed both prior installments, returns to direct.
David Jonsson has been cast as the adult Toussaint, the son of T'Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), who was introduced as a young child at the end of 2022's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." In that film, Nakia raised him in Haiti under the name Toussaint, after Haitian revolutionary leader Toussaint Louverture, while his birth name and royal identity, T'Challa, were kept secret to protect him. The character grows up over a time jump between films to take on the mantle his father held. Jonsson, a 32-year-old English actor known for HBO's "Industry," "Rye Lane," "Alien: Romulus," and "The Long Walk," won the EE Rising Star Award at the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards. Speaking from the Comic-Con stage, Jonsson said of joining the franchise: "Believe me, the honor is entirely mine," per TheWrap.
Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are also returning, according to Complex, which does not specify their roles; both have played Shuri and M'Baku, respectively, across the franchise. Denzel Washington is joining the film for his MCU debut, Gold Derby reports, in a role that has not yet been disclosed. Complex notes the film lands after "Avengers: Secret Wars," which is set for December 2027.
Coogler has directed every live-action "Black Panther" installment since 2018, and wrote Chadwick Boseman's 2020 death into "Wakanda Forever" rather than recasting T'Challa. He has also directed "Fruitvale Station," "Creed," and 2025's "Sinners." Marvel and Coogler confirmed the new film will be shot on large-format 70mm celluloid, the first MCU production made that way.
Marvel's Disney+ slate also includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's "Wonder Man," renewed for a second season after its January debut. Beyond Toussaint's coming-of-age arc, Marvel has not disclosed further plot details for "Black Panther 3."
