Netflix and Warner Music Group Sign Exclusive Multi-Year Documentary Deal

Warner Music's catalog — Bowie to Bruno Mars — is now Netflix documentary source material. The deal is less about licensing and more about converting IP into subscriber retention.

Netflix and Warner Music Group have signed an exclusive multi-year first-look deal to produce documentary series and films on WMG's artist and songwriter roster. The deal was announced Friday. Production will be handled through Unigram, a film and theater production company run by Amanda Ghost and Gregor Cameron, which will serve as WMG's longform programming arm. Projects will be developed in collaboration with the artists or their estates.

WMG's roster includes David Bowie, Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, and Madonna on the legacy side, alongside contemporary artists including Charli XCX, Coldplay, Dua Lipa, Bruno Mars, and Ed Sheeran. No specific projects were announced as part of the deal.

The agreement is the first partnership of this scale between Netflix and a major record label. It builds on Netflix's existing catalogue of music documentaries, which has included projects with Beyoncé, BTS, Travis Scott, and Taylor Swift, among others.
