Nike's MVPuppets campaign ran from 2009 to 2010 and produced some of the most culturally resonant sports marketing of that era — Kobe Bryant and LeBron James rendered as puppet roommates, voiced by David Alan Grier and Kenan Thompson, bickering about rings, chalk tosses, and the weight of competing legacies. Wieden + Kennedy wrote it. Legacy Effects — the same studio behind practical creature effects in major Hollywood productions — built the puppets. It was NBA playoff advertising that felt more like appointment television than a commercial break.

The campaign tracked Kobe's ring count in real time. The 2009 version of the shirt featured four rings, released after the Lakers won their fifteenth championship. A year later, after Kobe closed out the Boston Celtics in seven games to claim his fifth title, Nike came back with the 5 Rings edition.

The design is specific in a way that rewards attention. Puppet Kobe's hand is four-fingered — a deliberate nod to the Simpsons-style cartoon proportions used throughout the campaign. Five rings, four fingers. The math doesn't work cleanly, which means Puppet Kobe wears two rings stacked on one finger. It's blinged out in a way that would be gaudy on a real hand but reads as exactly right for a puppet built to embody championship excess. The graphic captures the whole spirit of the campaign: playful, self-aware, and completely unambiguous about who was winning.

The shirt was a House of Hoops exclusive, released in Lakers purple. It sold out fast. Today it circulates on eBay and resale platforms as a grail-tier piece of early 2010s Nike Basketball memorabilia — not because it's rare in the traditional sneaker sense, but because of what it represents. The MVPuppets era was the last moment when the Kobe-LeBron rivalry existed in its purest form: two players in their respective primes, running in parallel, never quite meeting in the Finals despite both being in Los Angeles and Cleveland orbit at the same time.

The campaign ended when LeBron left Cleveland in 2010. Nike brought the puppets back one more time in 2017 for Kobe's jersey retirement ceremony, with both sitting on a beach — a softer, elegiac version of the same dynamic. The original series, and the merchandise that came out of it, belongs to a different chapter.

The 5 Rings shirt is the definitive artifact from that run. It's a championship flex rendered in puppet form, complete with a structural impossibility that makes the whole thing funnier and better. If you can find one in good condition, it belongs in the collection.
