OpenAI announced Monday it has acquired Torch, a healthcare startup that unifies medical records from multiple sources. The acquisition price was not officially disclosed, though reports vary between $60 million and $100 million.
Torch's four-person team will join OpenAI as part of the acquisition. The startup, founded in 2024, developed technology to aggregate fragmented medical information from healthcare providers, diagnostic labs, wearables, and consumer testing companies into a unified view.
The platform consolidates lab results, prescriptions, diagnoses, treatment histories, and unstructured health information including doctor visit recordings and care instructions. Torch uses AI to summarize medical data, identify patterns, and present information in accessible formats.
"We started Torch to build a medical memory for AI, unifying scattered records into a context engine that helps you see the full picture, connect the dots, and make sure nothing important gets lost in the noise again," Torch's founders stated on the company's website.
The acquisition supports OpenAI's ChatGPT Health, launched last week. ChatGPT Health allows users to upload medical records from wellness apps including Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. OpenAI states the service is designed to support, not replace, medical care and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.
Torch co-founders Ilya Abyzov, Eugene Huang, James Hamlin, and Ryan Oman will join OpenAI. The team previously worked together at Forward Health, an AI-powered primary care business that shut down in late 2024 after raising over $400 million.
"Bringing this together with ChatGPT Health opens up a new way to understand and manage your health," OpenAI stated in announcing the acquisition.
The acquisition positions OpenAI to expand its healthcare offerings while competing with other AI companies entering the medical sector. Anthropic launched Claude for Healthcare on Sunday, providing complementary tools for healthcare providers, payers, and consumers.
