Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won the 2026 NBA Most Valuable Player award, his second in a row. The announcement, made May 17 on Prime Video, was the least suspenseful part of the Thunder's season — Gilgeous-Alexander had effectively closed the race months ago.
The case was never close
He averaged 31.1 points per game, second in the league, on a career-best 55.3% from the field — a scoring rate that high paired with that efficiency is rare on its own. Add a career-high 6.6 assists and the number that matters most: Oklahoma City went 64-18, the best record in the NBA for the second straight year. Voters reward winning, and Gilgeous-Alexander gave them no reason to look elsewhere. Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama were the other finalists, and both had seasons that in most years would carry a trophy. This was not most years.
What back-to-back actually means
Repeat MVPs are a small club. Among active players, Gilgeous-Alexander joins Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, and LeBron James as the only ones to win consecutive awards. The historical company is heavier still: he is the first player since Michael Jordan to average 30-plus points in four straight seasons. Every retired player who has won back-to-back MVPs is in the Hall of Fame. At 27, Gilgeous-Alexander is no longer chasing that tier of career. He is in it.
The quiet superstar
What makes the run distinctive is how little noise surrounds it. Gilgeous-Alexander does not court the camera, does not feud, does not trade in spectacle. He also won Clutch Player of the Year this season, leading the league with 175 points in the clutch — about as literal as evidence gets that the game slows down for him when it matters. He is the reigning Finals MVP. He is, by any measure, the best player in basketball, and he has built that case almost entirely through the game itself rather than the apparatus around it. The trophy is a formality; the real test starts now. Oklahoma City is the No. 1 seed and the betting favorite, and the franchise's young core has turned the regular season into a procession. But MVPs are won across 82 games and legacies are settled in May and June. Gilgeous-Alexander's Thunder open the Western Conference Finals against Wembanyama's Spurs — a series that pits this year's MVP against the player most likely to take the award from him next. The hardware is settled. The argument is not.
