Technology
OpenAI gave its most detailed look yet at Jalapeño, the inference accelerator it designed with Broadcom, at the Hot Chips conference at Stanford. A rack system packs 128 accelerators for 1.7 exaFLOPS of 4-bit compute, 27.5 TB of HBM4, and close to 2 petabytes per second of memory bandwidth. Per accelerator that is 13.4 petaFLOPS at MXFP4, 216 GB of HBM4, and 15.4 TB/s. OpenAI's benchmarks claim 1.5x to 1.9x more throughput and 1.7x to 3.6x lower end-to-end latency than competing systems. Production starts later this year, volume in 2027. The Register has the full spec sheet, and CNBC has more on OpenAI's custom silicon push.
Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk on September 30 after 21 years. Launched in 2005 and described by Jeff Bezos as "artificial artificial intelligence," the platform peaked at more than 500,000 workers doing data labeling, transcription, and surveys before Scale AI, Mercor, and Prolific pulled that labor elsewhere. CNBC has the details. The freight side of automation is better funded: Gatik raised a $200 million Series D led by the Qatar Investment Authority and Koch Disruptive Technologies, and Emerald AI raised $150 million at a $1.05 billion valuation.
