Key Points

  • The US Commerce Department lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
  • Anthropic announced the reversal on June 30, ending a standoff with the administration.
  • Commerce had barred foreign access to both models on June 12 over a jailbreak claim.
  • Mythos 5 had already been cleared for about 100 trusted partners on June 26.

The US Department of Commerce has lifted its export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, the company announced on June 30, ending a weeks-long standoff with the Trump administration, CNBC reported.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had ordered Anthropic to bar foreign access to both models on June 12, after a report that Fable 5 could be jailbroken to aid cyberattacks. The department partially eased the block on June 26, clearing Mythos 5 for roughly 100 trusted companies and agencies, before removing the controls on both models entirely.

The reversal closes the episode, but the precedent stands. For nearly three weeks, Washington treated access to a commercial AI model like a controlled munition, the tool it usually reserves for advanced chips. Anthropic, days into a confidential IPO process, just learned that its most valuable product can be switched off by federal order — and switched back on.
