2026 Oscar Nominations: 'Sinners' Leads With 16 Noms, Most Noms Ever

Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" broke Oscar history Thursday with 16 nominations for the 98th Academy Awards, surpassing the previous record of 14 held by "All About Eve" (1951), "Titanic" (1998), and "La La Land" (2017).

The supernatural thriller received nominations across all eligible categories, including Best Picture, Director, Actor (Michael B. Jordan), Writing (Original Screenplay), Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Production Design, Sound, Visual Effects, and the newly created Casting category.

Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" followed with 13 nominations. Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" and Norwegian film "Sentimental Value" each earned 9 nominations.

Notable records set include:

  • Ruth E. Carter's fifth nomination for costume design makes her the most nominated Black woman in Oscar history across any category
  • Timothée Chalamet became the youngest actor to receive three best actor nominations at age 30
  • Steven Spielberg earned his 14th best picture nomination as co-producer of "Hamnet"
  • Four non-English language acting performances were nominated, a record

Major franchise films underperformed: "Wicked: For Good" received zero nominations despite its predecessor earning 10, while "Avatar: Fire and Ash" received only two nominations. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 15, 2026.
