Cooper Flagg is 19 years old. On April 3, 2026, he scored 51 points in a single game, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score 50.
The Mavericks lost 138–127 to the Magic at home, but that detail almost doesn't matter. Flagg shot 19-of-30 from the field, hit six three-pointers, and put up 24 of his 51 in the fourth quarter alone. At 19 years and 103 days old, he broke the previous record held by Brandon Jennings (who was 20 years and 52 days when he had his 50-point game).
The History He's Making
The 51-point game isn't the only number that matters. Flagg is on pace to be only the fourth rookie ever to average at least 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists per game, joining Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Luka Doncic. He's the only player besides Michael Jordan to record multiple 45-point performances as a rookie.
This was also his second time breaking his own record this season. He previously scored 49 points on January 29, a number that, at the time, stood as the teenage scoring record.
The Scene
When Flagg hit 50 with 2:05 remaining, on an and-one turnaround jumper, the crowd went up. When coach Jason Kidd pulled him shortly after, the home fans booed. They wanted history, even in a loss. Kidd was eventually ejected after confronting officials; Naji Marshall also got tossed. But none of that is what people will remember about the night.
"The basket feels big," Flagg said afterward. "Your teammates are looking out for you." Kidd was blunter: "He should be Rookie of the Year. It's unbelievable."
The ROY Race
The interesting wrinkle: Flagg might not win Rookie of the Year despite all of this. Kon Knueppel currently leads with 80 first-place media votes to Flagg's 20. Knueppel leads the NBA in three-pointers made this season — a flashier, easier-to-measure stat, while Flagg has been carrying a heavier load on a struggling team. It's the most debated rookie race in years.
What's not debatable is what the 51-point game proved: Flagg is the real thing. One of the best rookie performances in the history of the league, at 19 years old, in a season that's already been historic before this moment.
