Google replaces ChromeOS with Aluminium OS in 2026

Google's new Android-based desktop OS, launching on HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, and Samsung hardware later this year, is more than a ChromeOS rebrand. It's Google's first serious attempt to put a Gemini-native operating system inside a laptop you can buy at Best Buy.

Google has confirmed that its new desktop operating system, internally codenamed Aluminium OS, will replace ChromeOS as the platform on consumer PCs starting in 2026. HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, and Samsung will ship hardware with it preinstalled across three tiers — AL Entry, AL Mass Premium, and AL Premium — alongside laptops, detachables, tablets, and mini-PCs.

It is built on Android, not on the Linux/Chromium foundation that ChromeOS sat on for fifteen years. And per Google's own job listings, it is "a new operating system built with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core."

That last part is the actual story.

What Aluminium OS actually is

Strip the marketing and Aluminium OS is the convergence of three things Google has been trying to do separately for a decade.

One: merge Android and ChromeOS into a single platform. Google has been quietly doing this since the introduction of Android apps on Chromebooks in 2016 and the broader push to make Android run well on larger screens during the foldable boom.

Two: build an operating system where the assistant is the operating system. Google's Rick Osterloh, SVP of Devices and Services, said it directly: "This is another way we can leverage all of the great work we're doing together on our AI stack, bringing Gemini models, bringing the assistant, bringing all of our applications and developer community into the PC domain."

Three: make a desktop OS that competes for real consumer dollars at the high end. ChromeOS has lived comfortably in the K-12 and budget-laptop segments for over a decade — about 9% of US laptop shipments, almost entirely Chromebooks under $400. Aluminium OS includes an "AL Premium" tier, which is the first time Google has officially named a positioning that competes with MacBook Air and XPS-class Windows hardware.

Why now

The timing is not random. Apple has spent the last 18 months stitching Gemini into iOS and macOS as the engine behind a redesigned Siri, paying Google roughly $1B/year for the right to use the model. Microsoft has spent the same period rebuilding Windows around Copilot. Both efforts have been instructive in the same way: retrofitting AI into a 25-year-old desktop operating system is a slow, expensive, frequently embarrassing exercise.

Google's wager with Aluminium is that the cleanest way to make AI the spine of a PC OS is to start over. Build the OS with Gemini already inside it. Make on-device inference a first-class workload alongside CPU and GPU. Treat agents as native primitives, not as plug-ins. The phone-side OS already does most of this on Pixel hardware. The bet is that the desktop version, built on the same foundation, can ship with the AI experience already integrated rather than bolted on.

The Chromebook problem

The risk is the user base Google already has.

ChromeOS works in K-12 and enterprise because it is locked-down, low-maintenance, and built around a browser that has near-monopoly market share. Schools buy Chromebooks because they can manage them centrally, wipe them in seconds, and not worry about a kid downloading something dangerous. Aluminium OS, built on Android, will have to demonstrate that it preserves that operational profile while opening up to the broader Android app ecosystem.

Google has signaled that it will: existing ChromeOS devices get legacy support through end-of-life; capable hardware "may receive optional upgrades"; and Chromebook Plus continues alongside Aluminium tiers. The transition path looks designed to avoid breaking the IT-procurement market that buys most of Google's PC hardware today.

But the long-term play is clearly consumer. Aluminium OS is how Google attempts to convert ChromeOS's institutional foothold into a viable third PC platform — one that can be sold next to MacBooks at Best Buy and have a coherent answer to "but what is it?"

What this means for Apple and Microsoft

For Apple: this is the first time Google has shown up to the laptop fight with a coherent, AI-native pitch. Apple's response — Gemini-powered Siri inside macOS, with the redesigned chatbot version expected at WWDC on June 8 — is now part of a broader competitive frame. Both companies are using Google's models. The differentiator becomes the rest of the OS.

For Microsoft: Aluminium OS is a problem in the segments where Windows has been most vulnerable. The sub-$700 consumer laptop market, where Chromebooks already compete, gets a more polished alternative. The premium segment gets a new entrant with clean AI integration that Windows can't easily match without disrupting decades of legacy software compatibility.

For Google: this is the largest platform bet they have made since Android in 2008. The hardware partner list — HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, Samsung — is exactly the OEM coalition that brought Android to global scale on phones. Whether that same playbook works on PCs depends almost entirely on whether Aluminium OS feels like a real desktop operating system, or like a phone OS stretched onto a 13-inch screen.

The first units ship in 2026. CES 2027 is when we'll know.
