New Balance releases the 1954R globally today, July 17, at $190. It arrives in three colorways — Sea Salt/Linen (U19541R3), Slate Grey/Castlerock (U195438R) and Black (U19543VU) — through New Balance and select retailers, after an early run at SOMEWHERE in Washington, D.C.
When New Balance first revealed the 1954R in June, the brand released images and nothing else: no date, no price, an all-grey sample badged "Heritage Collection." Both blanks are now filled in.
The name is a calculation
The 1954R is not named for a year. It is named for a sum. Add the 1906 and the 2002, divide by two, and you get 1954 — and that is the stated derivation, not a coincidence spotted after the fact. Hypebeast reports that "the name itself – 1954 – derives from the average of those two model numbers." The model is the average of its parents, and the badge on the heel says so out loud.
The build follows the same logic. Sole Retriever describes a 1906-inspired upper sitting on a 2002-style sole: premium wide mesh between swooping strips of suede, with the curved side panels framing the N logo. The materials are premium pig suede, synthetic overlays and breathable mesh. Hypebeast describes the ABZORB as segmented; Sneaker Bar Detroit places it in the forefoot.

The interesting number is not 1954. It is 190.
Uristocrat's June look at the 1954R called it what it is: New Balance mining its own archive as a parts catalog rather than reissuing it. What today adds is the price tag on that idea. At $190, a shoe assembled from two models New Balance already sells costs $10 more than the 1890 "Streamsong," which released in June at $180 — and it arrives with no collaborator, no story, and a launch pack of three neutrals. There is nothing here to buy except the shape and the materials.
That is the actual bet. New Balance is charging a premium for synthesis — for the judgment of which parts to combine — and asking the customer to treat that as the value-add rather than a name on the tongue. The brand kept its collaborator lane running in parallel, including Action Bronson's 2811, which makes the 1954R's blankness deliberate. Whether $190 is the right number for a remix is what today answers.
The colorways
All three launch makeups stay neutral. Sea Salt/Linen (U19541R3) is the cream, tonal option. Slate Grey/Castlerock (U195438R) is the greyscale anchor of the pack. Black (U19543VU) rounds it out. There is no accent colorway in the launch run, which puts the shape and the materials on the hook for the sale.
