Nike's World Cup play is not a kit drop — it is a cultural infrastructure project. The X2 collection consists of seven capsule collections built for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, each structured around three partners: a national football federation, a cultural collaborator, and a community youth sport organization whose logo appears on the back of every pre-match jersey. The collaborators read like a greatest-hits list of streetwear and fashion: NOCTA, Palace Skateboards, Jacquemus, Patta, PEACEMINUSONE, Slawn, and the Virgil Abloh Archive.
The Cryoshot
The centerpiece of each capsule is the Cryoshot, a new lifestyle silhouette that takes archived Nike football boots — studs and all — and encases them in a transparent thermoplastic polyurethane shell with an integrated Air unit. The result looks like a football boot frozen in resin: the original materials, colors, and stud patterns are visible through the clear sole, but the shoe walks flat. Nike has filed a patent on the construction. The seven base boots span the brand's football history, from the Striker 1976 (Nike's first soccer cleat) through the Mercurial R9, the Tiempo R10, and Mia Hamm's Zoom M9.
The seven capsules
Each collaboration carries a distinct design language. Palace Skateboards takes England with grayscale tracksuits and a Cryoshot built on the late-1980s Air Speed M — marking Palace's first Nike collaboration after years with Adidas. Jacquemus handles France with clean pinstripe kits on the Tiempo R10. Patta pairs with the Netherlands on a Mercurial R9 Cryoshot finished in Dutch orange with baroque print detailing that references Surinamese heritage. NOCTA takes Canada with a university gold Cryoshot on the Tiempo '94. PEACEMINUSONE (G-Dragon) represents South Korea on the CTR360 Maestri II. Slawn, the Nigerian-British artist, covers Nigeria with hand-drawn graffiti graphics on the 1976 Striker — the capsule that nods hardest at the legendary 2018 Nigeria kit. And V.A.A. closes the set for the United States on Mia Hamm's Zoom M9, with signature Abloh "AIR" iconography on the heel.
The drop
The rollout is staggered: collaborator retail and federation stores launched June 11, Dover Street Market followed June 13, and Nike SNKRS goes global June 16. Cryoshots are priced at $200 to $210 depending on the model.
The read
Nike is treating the World Cup the way it treats the Olympics — as a platform for the broader brand ecosystem, not just a jersey event. The X2 structure forces each capsule to be three things at once: on-pitch (the federation kits), cultural (the collaborator), and community-facing (the youth org). The Cryoshot is the object that ties it together, a shoe concept ambitious enough to anchor seven distinct aesthetics under one silhouette. Whether the transparent-sole construction has staying power beyond the tournament is an open question, but as a World Cup debut, Nike is betting that football culture and street culture are now the same audience.
