About Stüssy

Stüssy (pronounced "stoos-ee") is an American clothing brand founded in the early 1980s by Shawn Stussy. The brand is often associated with the surf and skate culture of Southern California. Still, it has since grown to become a globally recognized fashion label that embodies a mix of surf wear, streetwear, and high-fashion elements.

Shawn Stussy began by shaping surfboards in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He started using a marker to sign his surfboards with a distinctive signature logo, which eventually became the iconic Stussy logo. His uncle, Jan Stussy's signature, inspired the logo's design. Shawn then began screen printing t-shirts and shorts with this logo to promote his surfboards, selling them alongside his boards out of his car around Laguna Beach, California.

The brand quickly gained popularity within the surf community and, by the mid-1980s, had begun to garner attention from the emerging skate and hip-hop scenes. Stussy's appeal was partly due to its exclusivity and the underground vibe it maintained by producing limited runs of its designs.

As Stüssy expanded, it became one of the first brands to be embraced by the "streetwear" scene—a style of fashion that incorporates elements of hip-hop, skateboarding, sports, and Japanese street fashion. The brand is known for its innovative designs, quality materials, and the ability to blend various fashion influences seamlessly.

Over the years, Stüssy has collaborated with numerous artists, designers, and fashion brands, further solidifying its position as a pioneer and stalwart in the streetwear industry. Despite its growth and global presence, Stüssy has maintained its edgy and independent spirit, continuing to appeal to a broad audience, from skateboarders and surfers to fashion enthusiasts and hip-hop fans worldwide.
