San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama underwent an MRI on Thursday that showed no ligament damage to his left knee after hyperextending it during Wednesday night's 134-132 victory over the New York Knicks.
Wembanyama suffered the injury with 10:32 remaining in the fourth quarter while battling for an offensive rebound with Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson. Replays showed no contact with a defender, but his left foot slid forward upon landing, causing the hyperextension.
The Spurs center hobbled to the locker room unassisted, yelling "I'll be back" to fans multiple times as he exited. He returned to the bench with 1:22 remaining in the game, watching the Spurs complete the comeback victory. He finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds in 24 minutes.
Wembanyama will not play Friday against the Indiana Pacers. He did not travel with the team to Indianapolis, instead remaining in San Antonio for rehabilitation treatment. The Spurs listed his status as day-to-day and questionable for Saturday's home game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
This season, Wembanyama has appeared in 21 of the Spurs' 33 games and is averaging 24.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.9 blocks per game while shooting 52.5% from the field and 36.5% from three-point range. He previously missed 12 games earlier this season due to a left calf strain, returning to the lineup on December 13.
The Spurs are 24-9 this season and lead the Southwest Division.
