The Nike LeBron 23 "Hardwood Classic" releases today at $210 through SNKRS and select retailers. The colorway is Game Royal/White-Safety Orange under style code IM5125-400, and the pair is deliberately mismatched — the left shoe carries blue across its top half, the right carries orange — referencing the Cavaliers' blue-and-orange Hardwood Classics colors. It arrives in a season where James is no longer with the franchise the shoe references: he agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers in July after eight seasons with the Lakers. Also dropping today: the Kith x Salomon XT-EVO at $200, part of Kith's &Kin Fall 2026 collection. It comes in two colorways — Black/Lemon/Lava Falls (SL45568800) and Black Coffee/Excalibur/Bluing (SL45568900) — and introduces a silhouette that is new to the partnership rather than a recolor of an existing Salomon model. Chelsea Gray made two buzzer-beating three-pointers — the first to force overtime, the second to win it — both after turnovers by Caitlin Clark. A'ja Wilson finished with 26 points on 10-of-25 shooting, 6-of-6 from the line, and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 28 points on 10-of-18. Clark had eight assists and eight turnovers in 38 minutes, and Aliyah Boston pulled 12 rebounds. Las Vegas moves to 22-9, Indiana falls to 19-12.
In the playoff race, ESPN counts seven teams as effective locks, with the Mystics, Sparks, Mercury, Sky, Fire and Tempo competing for the eighth and final spot. Teams have between 11 and 16 games remaining.
The NFL preseason opened in Canton, where the Carolina Panthers beat the Arizona Cardinals 33-30 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Five albums arrived today, and we broke them down in this week's New Music Friday. Karol G's No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto is her sixth studio album and carries her first-ever official collaboration with Drake. Ravyn Lenae's Blue Island is a 14-track third album executive-produced by Dahi, following 2024's Bird's Eye. FLO's Therapy at the Club runs 16 tracks through EMI/Universal and reunites the trio with Sevyn Streeter, Oak Felder and Skippz. Pooh Shiesty's All Eyes on Shiest is his first full project since his early release from federal prison in October 2025, a 17-track set on 1017 Global and Atlantic with GloRilla, K Carbon, BIG30 and Tay Keith, who died in June at 29. Overmono's Pure Devotion is an 11-track second album on XL Recordings. Sam Smith and Alex Warren released singles.
At the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $360 million domestically, passing Avengers: Endgame's $357 million for the biggest debut weekend ever. It crossed $1 billion worldwide in six days, the second-fastest ever behind Endgame. Its $47 million Monday broke the record Black Panther set at $40 million in 2018. By day seven it stood at $1.15 billion and passed Toy Story 5 as the highest-grossing film of 2026.
Three wide releases open against it this weekend: One Night Only, a romantic comedy with Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro; Ice Cream Man, a horror film from Eli Roth; and Super Troopers 3, the Broken Lizard crew's first entry since 2018. Boxoffice Pro projects Spider-Man at $150-160 million in its second frame.
Technology
Google restructured the leadership of its AI operation this week. Demis Hassabis stepped down as CEO of Google DeepMind to become the unit's chair and Alphabet's chief scientist, a move he framed as giving him "the time and space to focus on the big picture." He continues to run the pharmaceutical spinoff Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's chief technology officer, takes over day-to-day operations as senior vice president reporting directly to Sundar Pichai, with Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams under him. The reshuffle landed alongside a set of senior departures. Outgoing Alphabet chief scientist Jeff Dean is leaving after 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, an AI-for-science startup, joined by Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le. Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures are co-leading the seed round, and Google is an investor and cloud partner. Nobel laureate John Jumper left for Anthropic earlier this year.
