Draymond Green has agreed to a one-year, $27.7 million contract to remain with the Golden State Warriors, a person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press on Tuesday.
Green declined that same $27.7 million player option in late June, a cap maneuver meant to give Golden State room to chase two stars this summer without his 2026-27 salary locked in.
Neither target arrived. LeBron James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on July 24, choosing Philadelphia over Golden State after leaving the Lakers. The Warriors had also planned to trade for Anthony Davis to pair him with Stephen Curry, but that pursuit never reached serious talks — Golden State did not engage Washington on Davis, and the Wizards have shown no interest in moving him, according to HoopsHype.
Green waited for James's decision before signing, then re-upped with the Warriors at essentially the same number he had opted out of. ESPN's Shams Charania first reported the agreement, citing Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, and the Associated Press confirmed it through a source with knowledge of the deal.
The re-signing keeps a core piece in place after a season that ended early. Jimmy Butler tore his ACL in a January win over Miami, ending Golden State's playoff hopes for the season. The Warriors also extended Kristaps Porziņģis for two years, $40 million during the same stretch, locking in a stretch big alongside Curry.
Green, 36, enters his 15th season with Golden State. He needs to play 51 games this season to reach 1,000 for his career, which would make him the second player in Warriors history to hit that mark, after Stephen Curry. He is a four-time NBA champion, a nine-time All-Defensive Team selection, and the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year, and he averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in 68 games last season.
